Default ford 400 motor in a 84 mustang

My brother is thinking of getting this 84 mustang that has aford 400motor in it and was wondering if anyone knows much about these motors? Are they good motors? He read somewhere that they were built for trucks and that it only has low end power.

A 400cc engine would be most likely something that came from a motorcycle, not any American vehicle I can think of.

Is it a Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, or Kawasaki engine? Most are pretty good, but the Honda would be the best of the 3.

I would guess that '84 Mustang would be pretty slow with just 400cc, though. You may want to upgrade that to a 302cid or even a 427cid stroker for a bit more power. Heck, a 2.3L 4-banger would be an upgrade.

The problem is in your first post you said 400CC, cubic centemeters not 400 ci.

yea the 400's are exactly what u said as being truck motors. they use cleve heads though so they can be made to have a lot of power but not for cheap as with any ford motor. that is cool to have them they accept only a bb bellhousing.

I answered about your 400cid, too. A stroked 302 or 351W would be an upgrade. Or, just find a Cleveland and stroke it. The 400 is good for torque, and can be set up to run pretty good (keep highway gears and use the torque to your advantage), but you'd be better of with a Windsor based engine.
