Default Port or buy new?

Christmas is coming up and I want lots more power from my '69 pony. It's current set-up is a 302 bored out to 308, roller cam, but with stock specs as far as lift and duration goes, performer rpm intake, holley 650 double pumper, long tube headers, and dynomax glasspacks. It goes through a C-4 to an 8" positraction rear with 3.50 gears. It doesn't have near as much low end get up as I would like, and won't break my 10.5 inch tires loose when I nail it. [:@] [sm=sigh.gif] I want to be able to do a good old fashion tire fry. I was looking at gettin some heads for better flow but don't think my parents will shell out the $1000+ dollars for aftermarket ones. Would I get enough power from porting mine, and how much would this run? Or, should I have a cam with around .500" lift installed? I am looking for the most bang for the buck and something under $500 would be best. How much would it run to have a cam installed? Thanks for the help.

Only porting the heads will probably run between $350.00 on the low end and as high as $600.00 at some shops. The thing you will run into the shop also wanting to do new springs, valves, retainers and keepers and of course a valve grind. It could potentially cost as much as buying a set of aftermarket heads. To do the cam you will have to remove the carb, intake, headers, heads, the valve train, the timing chain and cover and if done "in car" the radiator.

Not easy to do.

Ron

Have you looked at World Products heads, some people really like them...

Default RE: Port or buy new?

My old engine had the same setup going, except with a .512 cam and 4.62 gears. My step-dad blew that engine up, and I bought a new short block and rebuilt it using the old parts. So, the springs and all were matched to the .512 cam. does that make any difference? Since the big things I wanted to do are pretty much out of the question, what are some other things I could do to free up power. I was looking at an electric fan, but have no clue which one to get. I had also been told to get an H-pipe since now all I have is two pipes unconected. No I hadn't looked into World heads, but your the second person to recommened them so I will. I also heard that C-4's eat up alot of power. Is that true? You have one and are turning 10.60's on your motor [sm=icon_rock.gif] so I guess not. lol. Thanks for your help.

p.s. Your car is friggin' awesome, and 9's is bad ***. Wish I had a 347.

The springs are very important. They have to be able to handle the lift of the cam, or they will go into bind. That will cause the valves to float. To ad some power I might upgrade the exhaust with some headers, and get a Dr.Gas "X" pipe. That would pick up somewhere between 15-20 HP. Having the 2 exhaust running seperately is not a good idea.
An automatic does use up a bit more power then a stick, but nothing major. My C4 is a "full roller" so everything has been done to minimize the loss through the transmission.

3 angle valve jobs and behive springs will get you more power, and if you take it to get it ported(my recommendation if youve never done it before cuz its easier to lose power than gain) they will most likely have to do a 3 angle anyways

i have world products windsor jrs on my 89 5.0. along with some other mods like cam, intake, exhaust. The heads flow great and can be proted in the future if you wish. they are good for the money. if you wanna go cheaper then that, look for a set of gt40 irons of a explorer. I think that should fit your car. They flow well for a stock head.
but yea the world products heads are great.
