Default Better Milage Top Up, Down

I'm going out west next month. All the way to Seatle from the Milwaukee area. I have an '03 GT Convertible V8 with 5 speed.

I plan to drive as much with the top down as possible.

Just curious, what do you think better milage with top up, or down?

I'm not certain, but would think you'd get the "best" fuel economy while highway driving with the top & windows up. City driving there wouldn't be much difference

Sounds like a case for the Myth Busters!

you get better mileage with top up and windows up aswell cause its make your car more "streamline" at high speeds

UP= better aerodynamics. I however did not get mine for gas mileage. I really enjoy the " Top down expierience "

i kinda think it will be the same either way. i remember seeing a mythbusters where they were examining if you get better gas milage in a pickup truck with the tailgate up or down, and i think it was the same both ways, or maybe even better MPG with the tailgate up. idk if the same principles would apply to convertible tops.

you should try it one way going there, and the other way coming home and post ur results

Because of aerodynamics, top up would be more fuel efficient, but I'd say 1 mpg at most. So really just drop the top and enjoy yourself. And try to stick to secondary highways to get the full experience.

MPG in a truck is better with the tailgate up. It creates some type of air bubble and then air flows over the bubble instead of hitting the bed or w/e. If the tailgate is down, wind will hit the bed and create more resistance or something. And if you take the tailgate off, more resistance and over time, the bedsides can warp inwards.

Top down.

You will tend to drive slower and therefore save gas.

Enjoy the trip.
