Default 2.3l to 5.0l?

Ok, here's the plan. The car in question is a 1986 Panther Kallista with that years 2.3l NA Mustang I4. The car is fun to drive, very light weight, so is peppy with the 2.3, but i'd like to learn a bit about a 5.0 swap. I'm thinking i'd rather go with an '85 engine since it's carburated (correct me if i'm wrong). There seems to be much engine swapping info on here, but I can't find any in particular to my application. I'm sure i'll think of questions as I go, but for starters...

Do the 2.3 and 5.0 use the same tranny, motor mounts, and mount points? What about the rest of the drivetrain? What's the weight difference between the 2.3l and 5.0 engines?

Thanks

I'm not sure, but you'd have to change your drive train, rear axle, transmission, mounting brackets and I'm pretty sure you even have to switch out your drive-shaft with a stronger one, but that depends on yours. But a 2.3L I4 to a 5.0L V8 is a big alter, and a lot more torque. If you'd keep the stock drive-train. The torque created by the engine would probably just twist and mangle your current set-up. And seeing how the car is pretty old, too. The metal might be compromised.
And I'm not completely sure, this is just the stuff I think you'll have to swap out... [Which is the whole drive-train]

I was half expecting that. I am considering buying an older Mustang and rebuilding the motor, etc. Am I right that the '85 is carburated? How large is that 5.0, physically in the engine bay? I'll have to find pics of the Panthers engine bay, but does it look like it would physically fit even?

I've never seen or heard of that car, but it looks like a 5.0 will fit in it. Maybe it will be a little to narrow, though.

Yes, 85 has a carburetor.

Yeah it looks a bit narrow, but there's a ton of room with the 2.3 in there. I think it would be pretty sweet with even a stock 5.0, she weighs just under 2,100 lbs! It's in Florida now and i'm in Maryland. I'll be taking some more detailed pics and measurements on my next vaca. Hopefully in a couple weeks.

Any idea how much the 5.0 engine weighs when compared to the 2.3? I've heard it's not significantly heavier considering double the pistons, but I don't want to totally screw up the handling dynamics. She's pretty well balanced now.

Nice car, man. Get the measurements and I'm sure you can find out if a 5.0 will fit in it, to be quite honest I don't know if it will.

I think GT's weigh about 3300 and LX's weigh about 2800. If I'm right, that would probably mean the engine would be about 300 pounds heavier, give or take.

Checkk... the LX and the GT were the same except for a few cosmetic things. The LX had the 5.0 in it. You'd have to get the weight of the Non-GT/LX in order to properly formulate how much the weight difference is and apply it to the engine.

The point is, the 5.0L Windsor is a BIG engine. It's pretty heavy, and I'm betting gunna weigh a lot more than the I4 2.3L you got in that car. The steering dynamics is gunna change, and probably be either really bad, or really good. It can go either way, really.
