Default Technical help needed! (pics)

Hey guys. My first real post, 'cause I really need help.
I got me a rebuilt '98 GT that I've been working on, but I'm just starting into the technical field of it, so I'm still not sure about some things.

I have two questions:
1. The engine recently started to really break with the engine when I let go of the gas quickly, (it's a standard) which never happened before. The engine always breaks it, but it gives me a sharp jerk like never before. I heard that it may be coils, but wanted to get some input.

2. It looks like whoever had the car before did a little damage to the undercarriage, and I'm worried. There is a huge hole where (I think) the Transmission gets mounted, and I have no idea if it can cause damage, what I can do, or if that's really what it is. The picture included shows it pretty well, and I hope you guys could help me out.

Thanks.

looks like its time for a new rear main seal. If you change it, nows the time to start thinking about a new clutch aswell.
