Shocks help... Who's telling the truth?
Ok... well we had new tires up on my car and the guy said it needed new shocks. Well we took to toa different shop to have breaksput on it... we ask him if he thought it needed new shocks and he said no. The car isa 2000 and has 70,000 miles on it. The tire man said he thought it needed new ones because it sets low and he could "hear" them thumping...?We bought the car salvaged , hit in the rear, and we fixed it. We bondoed the rearcorner panels after straightening them out... Who is tellin the truth..Does it just set low because it was hit or could it have damaged teh shocks????

The old trick that I was always told about was to push on the hood, and if it bounces more than twice they are bad. I don't think thats very accurate because sometimes the car will be pretty shaky over some ruts, and not bounce when you put pressure onto it. 70k sometimes you will need them, and sometimes not. It really depends on the conditions of the roads you have driven on. In my 90 5.0 lx I replaced the original ones at I think 120 something thousand. The ones in the back were making a bunk noise over bumps, and it kept bottoming out. Shocks are something I never did routinely just when they got really bad for it to become a problem!

What year car? Are we talking shocks (rear) or struts (front) here?
Yes your car will sag if they are old and worn out....but they shouldn't be at 70K. I'm guessing the sag is from the hit.

When the ones in my old 90 5.0 were bad in the back it sagged in the back, and sometimes the back tires would rub when it bottomed out over a slight bump. The struts in the front were still good at 120 something thousand, and they were the original, but i've always believed in if you change the back shocks, change out the struts in the front too. It will only be a matter of time before they take a crap.

Haha I had that happen to me in my 76 Chevy one ton. I let the shocks go for like 4 years at least[roughly 25-30k miles] and I messed up the coil springs pretty bad. Had to replace em all.
