Gas Filler Check Valve?

Gas Filler Check Valve?
I have a 1999 mustang convertable 4.0L . I replaced that grommet around the filler gas tube. In doing so i broke the plastic check valve on the end of the filler tailpiece. Is that thing really needed? If it is do i have to drop the tank to replace properly?
