Manual Transmissions

Manual Transmissions
Simply put, I want to learn more about the inner workings of a manual transmission. About all I know is that a clutch somehow disengages the tranny from the drivetrain so that you cannot shift... I think. Any info you have is greatly appreciated. Just throw it at me and i'll try to digest it. Thanks a lot for any info because I have wanted to learn about manual trannys for awhile but no one can explain it well enough.

RE: Manual Transmissions
Wow, great articles - everything I wanted to know about them. Thanks a lot.
My only question is how does the throughout bearing work and why is it there? I read the little about it and how bearings work... still don't understand.

RE: Manual Transmissions
I have an adobe PDF file of the T5 rebuild manuals as well as the 3550 if anyone is interested PM an email address and I'll send it. The T5 is 4.11 meg and the 3550 is 2.88 so make sure you have enough inbox space lol. Found them on Fordmuscle.com here is the link.

RE: Manual Transmissions
The throwout bearing is what rides on the pressure plate and is "wedged" in the clutch fork, so when the fork, which does not rotate, touches the plate, it has something to spin against. I dont know what would happen if there was no bearing, but I bet it would make a hell of a noise!
