Default fuel tank sending unit or gauge?

is there a way to decifer which is bad....the fuel tank sending unit or the gauge? i'd hate to spend my time and after researching the cost of a sending unit when it might just be the simpler fix .... the gauge? by the way this is for an 86 gt vert

Yes, there is a way. You unplug the sender and substitute a know resistance value and watch the gauge. Not sure of the values off the top of my head though......sorry.
