It's the diameter of the converter. However the more important thing you want to look for is stall speed. An 11 inch converter can be made to stall at 1500 or 5000 rpm it just depends on what is done inside. Rating them by inches is kinda the old school hill billy way, generally a smaller diameter converter stalls higher and has less rotating weight, but in todays performace market we go off of rated stall speed and stall torque ratio. When shopping for a converter it is best to deal with a good company like Precision Industries, I highly suggest that you stay away from TCI or B&M. As for stall speed it really depends on your set-up and trans but if your running an AOD look for at least a 3200 stall with a lockup clutch.

Also, when getting a stall, make sure you match the stall to the cam's operation rev range. I bought 2700 PI converter and had a stock cam. The car was way slower than before. So I bought a TFS-1(2200-6000) and the car ran like a dream.
