my cars oil change...

RE: my cars oil change...
It depends as much on total time as mileage.Oil has additives that nuetralize acid that are a by-product of combustion. This has to work constantly to combat corrosion of internal parts. If you drive a lot of highway miles then mileage will cause you to change the oil before time will get you.Synthetic or not you shouldn't let oil stay in longer than 3 mos.Especilly if you do a lot of stop and go driving. If you don't drive enough to boil off the water and acids, they build up and are the main components of the dreaded sludge you find under the oil cap.You can remove the oil cap and see how much of this oily creamy looking goop is forming. If there is a minimal amount then thats good,if there is a lot, that's bad.You can also pull the dipstick and look for signs of moisture in your oil.

just curious ebein, is the light in your vette an idiot light that goes off every 3000 or 5000 miles, or does it actually measure something about the oil? if yes, do you have any idea of what it measures about the oil to determine if it's dirty? I seem to remember my mom's bmw having something like that.
