One thing that really catches my eye about this story is that the tires on the kids van were 9 years old and probably driven the hell out of. I'm betting the tread on those suckers were down to basically a drag racing slick.

That sounds like just a bunch of BS to scare people into buying more tires to me. People need to learn how to drive through a blowout. I have had several in my life ranging from a quick leakdown to a full blown loss of tread and have never even come close to losing control of the vehicles. It seems peoples first reaction is to slam on the brakes and jerk the wheel though, worst thing to do. Also, I don't think age has any effect on the performance of a tire, unless it's just been sitting out in the sun.

well driving through a blow out is hard.. expecially when your not expecting it, you have like 1-2 seconds to react before your in a oncoming traffic lane.

Thank you for the information... Honestly, i never really gave a thought to the age of the tire if it appeared to be in good condition. I am going to check our vehicles and will report the oldest tire that we are using..

ooops: The tires on my Mustang are from 2001.
