Less than $10 Auto Shifter Mod:
After getting the idea from my wife’s Grand AM and my oldest son’s Corvette, (damn GM) and less than$10 at the fabric store, I have a new look. The Corvette son and I did the following:
1. Removing the automatic transmission **** is a little tricky. We turned the car on to the pre-ignition stage and depressed the brake pedal, then moved the shifter to the lowest position. On the back side of the ****, using an allen wrench we unscrewed the set screw.
2. It took a lot of pulling, but carefully pull the **** off, being careful not the damage the overdrive button wires. After searching the internet, I figured out I needed to cut the overdrive button wires, (actually I broke them). Back execution of a good plan. I slid the plastic shifter shaft cover off and discarded it
3. We carefully removed the shifter bezel and disconnected the cigarette lighter connector and set the bezel aside.
4. The using some very high quality leather like material (LOL, expensive vinyl) my wife made a really cool boot the some great stitching on the front and a hem on the bottom with a draw cord.
5. We turned the boot inside out and slide the **** into the boot and secured it with a wire tie. Then slide the **** back onto the shaft, reconnected the overdrive button wires. We slid the bottom of the boot over the shifter mount and pulled the drawstring to secure it. Re-installed the bezel. And finished !!!
Now I have a sports car look. I know, according to the Corvette owner, “real sports cars have only two seats”.
