Q: REAR END-what options do I have (swap into 1st gen rx7)
Hello Everyone.
My name is Bartok. I am new to the mustang forum but have been active in other forums. Finally i have decided to write up a bit in request for some help from knowledge group of the people. I am in the process of restoring 1980 widebody rx7. At this point the next step would be to swap an rear end from mustang. Since i have a widebody kit and my wheels are European "Compomotive" with 4.5" 5 hole pattern mustang conversion is the most desirable. Also it is commonly know for mustang rear end to perform well in rx7 swaps, as well interchangeability of the parts is flexible.
So far from my research i have narrowed up the selection to an 8.8" rear end which will require a 5 bolt axles, 3.90-4.10 spectrum of gearing and definitely disc brakes. Also outer disc to disc space should be 59" (makes sense?) but it could be up to 3" wider. Rims are 245/50/16 with a great +/- 5.5" offset.
I would love to be able to spend 1,500.00 for parts and do simple assembly, but one of the reasons to be here is to save costs and still do it right so bare with me and my questions and please respond with a help full manner. Thanx.
1. The least expensive option so far it is for me to get fox body rear (50-250 craigslist). There are some options with gearing, or i can always change it ($ 150 bucks). but not many rears have a discs. What does it take to upgrade from drums to discs. I see kits where only caliper bracket, calipers and discs are changed. On another hand i see different kits which come with a different length axles. Do i have to get new axles or not while upgrading to discs or is it also based on the kit that i get
2. what cars does 3.9 or larger gearing comes in stock? do any of them have discs.
3. Or maybe anyone has and "combo trick" for the buck.
thank you for help, and please visit my cardomain page

Just find a complete disc brake rear from an SN95 GT. I dont know the overall width of it or the width of an RX7, i just know the SN95 rear is 'i think' like 3/4" wider on both ends than the Fox body.
If youre after a 3.90, those gears are available for an 8.8, but i dont know if they ever came stock.
Sounds like quite a project, putting an 8.8 under an RX7.

....thank you for the response. another pro for this option would you know couple of things. thanx
-what is the cost of gearing and parts? compared to fox rear
-Is sn95 all new pre-neewest body models. Is it same core or different parts than fox (like gearing )
-Do v6 or v8 have different gearing. which is the highest?
-how many pistons calipers have, is is comparable with willwood?
-do i just leave abs disconnected?
ive seen these assemblies for $450. maybe it is the best bet for a buck. Besides is it a lot of work to put in rear yes and not just cur/gring off brackets and re-weld, keep alignment and even upgrate. i am just wory about not finishing it before spring, so i can get the roller from garage for outdoor body work, and finishing that during warmer days next year. Long process i guess. but better effect than graduation from collage
