Default wats the best way to clean our motors

while washing the cars my dad decided he would spray degreaser all over the engine, scrub it a bit, then rinse with the hose. needless to say there were some problems. the motor started misfiring like a bitch and it sounded like it was cammed. it also would bog down getting out of first and my power steering would go. the car is working fine now but id really like to know wat a better way would be for future references. thanks.

his idea is fine, you do however need to completely cover all electrical components. that or mixture of simple green and water, but covering electrical components is a must

Your dad had the right idea, though maybe take a more gentle approach to it next time, like someone above said, cover all electronics before you take a hose to it. If you can get away without using a hose thats even better.

Under no circumstance should you ever steam clean or power wash your engine

All I ever do is spray the engine down with some simple green and hose it off, works amazing. You must have been careless with the hose because most of the engine is water proof.
