Cams are a good improvement, not too hard to install. Get a b303 motorsport cam and 1.72 rolloer rockers, it's a good combo with stock heads. Cams help your car BREATHE, so a cam is definitly a good investment. :)

if your going to do a cam, do yourself a favor and do heads at the same time. you have to tear the motor completely down to do a cam swap. the only thing on the top of the motor you dont take off to do the cam is the heads.

a cam is fairly easy to install. just time consumming. will help the motor breath a lot better

Cams are a bit of a pain in the (_|_) to install cause you gotta tear down pretty much the whole topend, as well as pull the rad out just to give clearance to yank the thing out of the block. But yea it's a huge performance potential.

An cheap/poorer alternative (but still helps breathing) would be to install higher ratio rocker arms.

greystang is right about the higher ratio RR but if you have stock heads, the higher ratio my kill the stock valve springs...so may a high lifting cam.
even if you dont do heads at the same time as a cam, at least put in a brand new timing chain. with an 88 stang, if you still have the orriginal timing chain in there, its long overdue for a change

Most people don't realize that the cam in a 5.0 is actually pretty big for a stock cam, the heads are the problem on these motors the E7 just won't flow much, and no matter how big of a cam you put in the E7's will be the restriction. Look at the Factory Stock guys, they are going well into the 11's on a stock 5.0 cam, granted there are alot of top secret things done in the valve job and short block, but it goes to show a stock cam car can go good.
