Default 1989 Stang w a/t question

i recently just found a decent deal on an 89 stang 5.0 i was looking to fix up for a local dragway that does races. I currently race my 1989 Nissan Maxima, shes won her fair share of races...but ive always wanted some raw american muscle to race with. Maybe it was the races against 5.0's (to which i lost horribly) with them jumping on 2 wheels off the start that made me want one. whatever the case, i have a question. my maxima is standard...the stang i bought is automatic, is it worth fixing up and putting power into to race with an automatic transmission? ive talked to some people and they say that a well driven automatic will show smiliar results as with a standard but u still wont get the full power. im funding this entire project on race money...so price isnt an object...id like to keep it automatic if possible and get enough power out of it to put on a show..i have heard several people also say that an a/t robs power. while i know this is true, i was just wondering if im going to get good power out of this thing when all is said and done.

Actually, when all is said and done...The Automatic will be faster. If it's done right.

And I'm going to move this to the general tech section...

how exactly would an automatic transmission rob power? as far as drag racing an auto with a kit and stall is better than a manual. but a standard is more fun.

you lose more through an auto than a stick, but it's a bfd. the built auto will shift faster and launch better.

if your going to use it as a drag then yes the auto is going to be better because if you build it right then it will launch better and shift right everytime and quicker than a standard. Overall the auto in the end will be better but the standard in my opinion is just way more fun.

i completely agree, driving standard is a whole lot of fun, but i was just into trying something new, ive never really raced automatics other than back in the day racing stock kiddies with my 96 Corolla (stock as well) lol how stupid i was. but im glad to here im not going to have to pull the tranny on this car...what should i get as far as a kit goes?
