New Clutch on 02 - Noisy when not engaged?
Just purchased my 02 Stang Convertible and it was fine yesterday, but today I'm noticing a sound resembling a loud engine knock sound from under the car when stopped and in neutral with my foot off the clutch. As soon as I even rest my foot back on the clutch, the sound stops. Also does not make the sound when the car is moving.
The clutch is brand new, and Im not sure what would make that sound. I opened the hood and didn't hear anything, so its definitely coming from under the car. Any thoughts? |
Sounds like the clutch cable is loose allowing the throwout bearing to rattle against the pressure plate fingers.

this is weird because this has just started happening to me, and I just changed out the clutch also...

I did some more research last night and found this. The 3rd post down describes our issue exactly.

Also, post #5 in that link mentions a "pilot bearing," so it might be a good thing to check into all three; clutch alignment, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing. |
From your description. I can tell you a couple things that is not part of your noise.
The throwout bearing is not working when your foot is off the clutch pedal. It's all spinning but they are all spinning together. The bearing only works when the engine is running and the clutch disc is disengaged. Don't worry about the disc alignment. It's only for assembly. |
