Hey guys. So, I am getting a new 2012 GT manual within the next few days, but I have a question about the gear box. I have read a lot of reviews and every now and again, I will read a bad one about the transmission being bad after just a few thousand miles and shifting becomes... hard. Several people out of the ones with problems have had to replace their entire transmission multiple times. I was wondering why this is exactly. I hear that Ford now uses parts from Japan and perhaps their economical instability right now may have played a huge part in the faults but I would like to think not. Please, if you know anything, I would really like to hear it!

Actually, I believe the tranny is made in China, not Japan. If you do a search in the 2011 section you will find several threads regarding this

It's made by Getrag, and I've heard they're having issues with about 2-3% of the manuals out there. That's actually typical of new vehicles, this is an entirely brand new transmission in an entirely brand new engine, so it's bound to have issues.

If I had to guess, I'd bet it's similar to why a lot of folks have issues with TREMECs, probably a slight misalignment problem with the input shaft due to either manufacturing tolerance in the blocks, bellhousings, transmissions or a combination of the 3.

It could also be a material spec issue with transmission components. Currently manufacturers pretty much have to spec the lightest materials and make the components just strong enough for the application in order to keep drivetrain efficiency up for mileage purposes. Occasionally due to variances in manufacturing, it results in parts that warp etc.

as 67 said, its only 2-3% and ford will replace everything as many times as necessary to fix it iirc.
