Default i want to do a compression check and/or a leak-down test

i dont know how to do these tests, and i dont know what tools i need.
i suspect i need at least some type of threaded fitting i can insert into the spark plug hole and a hose and a pressure gauge.
then, turn the crank and watch the pressure gauge and note the max pressure level. then compare that value to some standard? then go to next cylinder?
is that close?
leak test sounds like somehow the cylinder gets pressurized (maybe the same way as the compression check?) and i sit and watch to see if it naturally loses pressure.

anybody want to correct set me straight on this/
also, what tools will i need

thanks in advance!!

Ok. A compression check is simpler than a leak down test. So lets start there. You will need a compression gauge set. The set (you can rent one from a parts store) will have the treaded fittings and hoses included. You needto remove the spark plugs from the engine, block open the throttle. Start with cylinder #1. Turn the engine over for about 3-5 seconds. Write down the #. Repeat on all cylinders. The reading should be within about 5% of each other, thats the only "real" standard. But usually around 120 or so is ok. Repeat the test "wet" by putting a little engine oil in the spark plug hole before pulling the test. This will give you more info about the piston rings /valves etc.
The leak down test requires putting the piston at TDC and pressurizing with an aircompressor. Then you watch the gauge and listen for air escaping, IE through the exhaust, another cylinder etc. Hope this helps!

it does.
so the engine is partially apart at the moment, intakes, wires, hoses, battery.
so no chance i can do the compression test apparently.
leak test however sounds doable

i suspect i introduce air into the cylinder through the plug hole for the leak test? where do i put the gauge?

Well yeah, ya kinda need power to turn the engine over. By intake do you mean the manifold or the air intake to the throttle body?

The leak down kit will have instructions, but the gauge is in between the air compressor line and the engine, and yes it goes into the plug hole for each cylinder like a comression tester does. It will have 2 gauges one for the air comressor and the other for the air pressure valve that goes to the engine.

upper intake and everything before it is off.
if i head over to autozone, i can pick up one of these leak test kits?

(i know i needed power to crank the engine )

Lol, just obeying your sig!! Yes you should be a ble to rent the leakdown tester from Autozone, or any other Parts store. I assume you have an air compressor then?
