Default damaged thread and thread chaser Q's (with pic!!)

heres a pic of the bolt with a clearly damaged thread.

i dont know how it got damaged, but i already have a new bolt to replace it with.
so, it was suggested to me that i use a thread chaser to clear out the threads where the bolt goes.
ok, having some trouble finding a chaser of the right size.

so, is it possible the bolt thread is the only thing damaged? i would think if the threads in the hole where the bolt goes (wtf is that called? the female threads?) were damaged, the entire thread of the bolt would be bad because the bolt threads are moving over the bad spot and would damage more than just one spot on the bolt. am i thinking correctly?

i dont want to put the new bolt in and ruin it for no reason.
but if i do need a thread chaser, anybody know where i can find one that is the size i need? apparently the bolt is 5/8" 18.
thread chaser would fix any damage to the female thread or would that require a cutting tool of some sort (dye i think its called)?

thanks for any insight
