Default Mustang GT as a tow vehicle

I've got a 2007 GT, 5 speed I would like to use as a tow vehicle. I'm not wanting to tow a horse trailer or camper but use it to tow a small car on a tow dolly. I don't know what a tow dolly typically weighs but one of my car's weighs 1300 lbs and the heaviest would weigh around 2300 lbs.

Is this possible?

I once pulled an unloaded tow dolly with my 96 Explorer 5.0 and it was scary and I took the dolly back to the place I rented it from. But mainly because the dolly was too narrow for my car and the tow straps were too long to strap down the 13" tires.

I'm hoping because the Mustang handles much better than my 96 Explorer, it wouldn't feel as scary.

I no longer have my 96 Explorer. Loved that vehicle but sold it to my step son.

I'm not even sure I could find a hitch/receiver rated to pull a small car with for my Mustang.

My Subaru Baja Legacy 5 speed is rated to pull 2500 lbs but the hitch is only rated for 2000 lbs.

Thanks!

No. Where are you gonna bolt the receiver? Buy an old truck or something, mustangs weren't made for that.

I believe the owner's manual says (if absolutely necessary) you can tow a max of 3000lbs. But I've heard of forum members who towed less than that end up with transmission damage- regardless of whether they kept it out of overdrive/5th (you say 5 speed, but that could be auto or manual for all we know)

Why are you wanting to use your mustang for this? Have you welded a tow hitch onto it?

Mustangs can tow. I know LOADS of guys who pull tire trailors to track events. That being said, I'd limit it to about 1,000 lbs total weight between inside the car and the trailor.
The Explorer is a much better tow vehicle. (Said as someone who has one.)

I once towed my dads 98 Dodge ram extended cab home with my 4V GT. That ram weighs 5500lbs, but I was using a tow strap. Personally, there is no way I would use a mustang to tow something unless absolutely necessary. Just get a cheap 1/2 ton F150 and be done with it. I got my 95 for $1000 and it would tow just about anything.

The other day I saw a Mustang of my model with a hidden hitch receiver bolted to it. But it was for a tiny hitch. Say 1.25 Class I, 2000 lbs.

I just wondered if there was a larger reciever/hitch available for the Mustang to pull a small car.

Unless it's in the gearing, I find it odd my old 96 Explorer with a 210hp 5.0 small block could pull 7000 lbs but my Mustang that produces 100 more HP is only rated to pull 2000 lbs?

Dad wants to sell me his 98 Chevy 1500 Express conversion van, 350 engine I am thinking about buying from him. Providing I can sell my wife's '07 Buick Rendezvous without loosing my *** on it. I think it would be a hard sell.

It's not just in the HP rating. Suspension, transmissions strength, frame length, and gearing all come into play. Plus stopping all of that weight is a problem too, if you stop too fast with no trailer brakes, then you run the risk of jack knifing.

Anything is possible but just because it is doesn't mean you should.

I would not recommend towing that much weight with a Mustang. JC316 nailed it.

There are a lot of factors that go into a tow rating and the Mustang is not designed with towing in mind which means the braking system and tranny (drive train) are not optimally designed for it. Meaning, you can get away with it in a pinch a couple of times but continous use will damage both systems, permanently.

Buy cheap used truck (like a ranger) and use that instead.
