Default Barton shifter in a 2014 GT

A couple months back I installed a Barton Short throw into my 2014 GT. Since then I've had some issues shifting from neutral directly into first gear. I would say I have a 50/50 shot of hitting first. to circumvent that, I just shift to 2nd then up to first, no issues. Playing around with the shifter it seems like there's not much room or 'play' in the spring when heading into first/reverse. The margin for error is very small. I don't know how else to explain it.

Anyone out there with a Barton experience this? Did I get a bum shifter? Is this normal? I really wanted to get the MGW and the more I deal with the Barton the more I'm thinking, MGW.

Thanks!

When you installed the shifter, did you make sure the shifter boot was lined up properly in the notch of the shifter? The boot may be rubbing and causing it not to engage correctly

The boot is on correctly. Like I said, Its really hard to explain. The best way to put it, I guess, would be to say there's about 1/8" to 1/4" of easy travel to go into reveres. There's very little resistance in the spring, so from the neutral position to reverse/first you can't put any wait on the shifter otherwise you end up easily in reverse.
