What year 5.0L Automatic Mustang to buy?
I'm considering buy a low mileage 5.0L automatic Mustang to put a Roush Supercharger on. What changes/improvements were made in Mustang Coyote engine & auto trans. year by year from 2011 to 2014? What I'm looking for is whether is any year where a substantial change/improvement was made in either the Coyote engine or the auto trans. that would make a big difference in the car if I'm going to put a supercharger on it.
I had an '08 4.6L with a supercharger & loved it, but I want a 5.0L Coyote automatic with a Roush supercharger for a keeper. My wife & I will get more use out of it with an automatic & with 575 H.P. it should roll along quite nicely. Love that supercharger whine!
Thanx for responses in advance!

Well the 2013 has hell of a lot more HP from the factory. I had an 05 GT and now I have a 13. There is a big difference. I love the Body on the 13+ since they did make changes if you research the diff. between 12 and 13s.

2013 or 2014 ford retuned the engine to get a bit more HP out of the motor. But, an aftermarket tune would give all 2011-2014 engines the HP so unless you plan on keep the car stock, I wouldn't worry about the minor factory difference in HP.
Aside from that, most changes are to the body. Personally I don't like the 2011 (and 2012?) rear end. I prefer the 2013 and 2014. Also the 2013/2014 look meaner from the front.

Methinks the 2011-2012's look meaner up front, but look like poodoo in the rear. The 2011-12's will probably also end up being more collectible than the 13-14s, being that they marked the return of the 5.0. Overall I prefer the appearance of the 13-14s with most of the credit going to the facelift in the rear. The Shelby front fascia is nice, but different strokes for different folks.

more detailed reviews of each year (up to 2013) if you are up for a bit of reading.

Thanx guys! It sounds like the 2013 might be the best choice for me if I could find a low mileage, super clean GT w/automatic. One further question: For a weekend crusier is their any great advantage to the optional 6 speed auto trans. in 2013 & 2014? Is it any stronger than the 5 speed auto, or is it just about commuter mileage improvements? I didn't find a 6 speed manual any great advantage over a 5 speed manual in my '08 Mustang, so I'm wondering if a 6 spd. auto would be any plus in a 575 HP automatic Mustang. Being stronger would be an advantage, but then I don't thrash cars & break things like a kid at 72.... but I do like WOT when safety is possible like getting on an open freeway or on a back desert road! I was a sophmore in H.S. when the '57 Chevy came out so I love acceleration!
Here's frame off, recreation of my car when I graduated from H.S. in 1959! In 1959 I had $1100. invested it which was a lot of money in the Dark Ages of the 50's! I didn't realize there was anything but cars & girls until I went to college in the 62 & started to pay attention to the what was going outside of my "little 60's world" just about me! I joined the National Guard & avoided the Vietnam War, almost being killed in the Watts Riot in L.A.! I came out of the 60's a "moderate" liberal & still am at 72! A very, very odd thing to find on any forums about men's hobbies from cars to guns, but that is for a different thread! (Smile)
Thanx for all the helpful responses! I appreciate your time & opinions!

I haven't driven a 2011+ with the six speed auto. I can tell you there's no way it can be worse than the 5 speed auto in 05-10.
The 5r55s (5 speed) auto used in the mustang and explorers are crap. They are prone to oblong the tranny hole for the solenoid actuator for the 2nd-to-3rd gear and 3rd-to-4th gear solenoids which causes harsh upshifting and delayed/harsh downshifting. In a worst case scenario the tranny will lose it's ability to shift into 2nd, 3rd, or 4th or all of them.
the 6-spd auto is supposed to be much improved over the 5-spd.

My Roush Specialist say's he has heard of no problems with supercharging the 5.0L automatic assuming driving it sensibly. As of now, I think I'd rather have a 2013 or 2014 setup that way to a 2015. I'll drive the 2015 GT first to see if the independent rear suspension makes enough difference to outway my liking the 2014 styling better. Frankly, I'd like to have a 2008 with a supercharged 5.0L in it, but I don't want to get into that can of worms!

Thanx for the reply! I guess I misunderstood what I read. I take it the 6 speed is not an option, but the standard auto in the 2013-14 GT? If so that answers my question since it is the only auto trans. available.

As far as the picture - I think there is some confusion here. That is a Shelby GT500 Mustang and not a normal GT with a supercharger. If that's what you want then you should get it - please don't think supercharging a GT will be the same.
