You can mess up your car anywhere depending on a lot of factors.
1. How good a driver you are. If you miss gears, bounce off the rev limiter, and powershift every time, you will break something fairly quickly.
2. Racing will be harder on the engine but if you know how to drive, you should be good for awhile.
3. Stuff does happen anywhere that can damage you engine and car. It is inevitable.
4. Maintanence is also a big issue. LIke everyone already said.
