Go 1/2 inch. I've had 3/8, and while I still use it as far as hand tools go, I rarely use the impact.
I have recently switched to using a 1/2 inch cordless impact. Pretty handy. Still have air, but use the battery powered more and more.

Get an impact with a 1/2" drive, and for the times you need to use a 3/8" drive socket just use a 1/2 - 3/8 adaptor.

Would also recommend a 110V over a rechargeable one so you have consistent torquing ability. That is assuming we're not talking air tools anyway. I have an 18V rechargeable one and it works great until the battery starts dying and I gotta sideline the job while it recharges.

I've got like six batteries! The Ryobi brand batteries seem to be fairly consistent, but when they are dead, they have nothing. I still generally check torque specs by hand.

Im thinking corded 1/2 from harbor freight. I really just don't want torn up hands for a clutch and a steering rack.

I have the 18V from Harbor Freight. Decent enough for the price, about 45 mins to charge but definitely nowhere near the advertised torque on the packaging. Think it said 250 or 300 lbs.... Lol on its best day maybe 80-100. I suspect that their 110V corded has better torquing abilities but still less than the advertised rating. Good for small jobs nonetheless though, but having been there I would recommend spending a little more on something. Heard Kobalt (Lowes or Home Depot house brand) has a decent corded one for around $120 that will do what it says it will.

Im very hard on tools. That's why I love HF grinders and stuff. They really take a beating. The reviews say if you get a 12 ft cord no power is lost. I just ordered Mcleod 1 stg. and a fancy rack. Christmas vacation should be fun.Im thinking motor mounts too.

1/2" most important before 3/8". Actually, after 60 years in this game, and having had various close-angle 3/8 and 1/2, and broken a number of 3/8, keep a good, heavy-duty 1/2 available, do your 3/8 wrenching by hand.
