66' Mustang's solenoid's up in smoke?
Hi, Im a newb w/a newb question.
I had my 66' stang sitting in the garage for like 2 or 3 months. When I go to start it, I can't. I take the battery to Pep BOys and they tell me I need to replace it; so I do. I'm ready to start the car now w/my new bat. When I do I hear the starter turning and I see sparks and smoke coming from the starter relay switch. Then everything goes dead and nothing happens when I turn the key.
So... instead of reading up, I go and buy a new relay (dumb, I know). When its all installed I go again to turn my car on and boom, same thing happens.
Im sure there's simple tests I can run and it doesnt seem like hard work to get it fixed, but I just need to know where to start???
Thanks in advanced people.

RE: 66' Mustang's solenoid's up in smoke?
First off, make damn sure the ground connection from the battery is bolted to your ENGINE block. If that's good, I would look at the positive connections to your starter solenoid. Make sure they are correct, and tight. If those are good, I would look at replacing the starter solenoid. May be shorted internally. And if those don't solve the problem. look at the starter. It can be shorted internally also.

Take your starter out, and take it to autozone or pepboys or whomever and have them test it. If it is OK, then make sure all your connections are clean and tight. Then, put on your new relay (we call it the solenoid) and see if you have success.

Thanks guys.
Im pretty sure its not the solenoid seeing as the same thing happened to the new one I bought. I am gonna take the starter to Pep Boys though and see whats up w/that.
Thanks again.
