Changing Geras DIY - how hard to learn
 

Question about installing gears.

I have my gears and traction lok for a 7.5" ford rear end. I've ordered the install kit (shims, bearings, seals, etc) and the friction modifier. I still need the actual gear grease/oil, but I think you can pick that up from any autozone/napa type store. (hopefully)

I think I have everything I need to do the install.

I was going to have someone do the install for me, but recently was offered the chance to do the install myself, under the watchful eyes of someone who knows what they are doing. (oddly enough the chance to learn to do it is a birthday present from my father)

I would rather work on things myself (I've rebuilt a few engines, blah blah blah), but have always stayed clear of transmission/axle work because it's such a pain to get right.

So, the question is, how difficult of an install are the gears/t-lok?

I know I shouldn't attempt to do it myself, but with a really good experienced mechanic helping/showing me how to do it, how difficult is it really going to be?
How much learning curve time should I expect?

Are there any specialized tools that I might need? (I'm pretty sure the mechanic who will be helping me has all of the needed tools, but thought it might be a good idea to make sure before we started the install)

You are working with tolerances, just like you would building motors, which you are familiar with.

The 2 most important tools you will need are a dial indicator (any decent repair shop will have one) & a press. Basic tools and a BFH incase you get really pissed will take care of the install!

With a good mechanic that's familiar with installs, you will be just fine.

if some you have some one that knows what they are doing helping. and checking your work when you get done you won't have a problem. the big deal with gears is getting them shimed out right.

Intially I was going to attempt to do these by myself but I got my buddies dad whos a mechanic to watch over me when I did them. I highly suggest it took about 5-6 hours on jackstands and rebuilding the rearend but it was worth it n only havin to fix some cow fences rather than the 300 to get em put in.
