Headlight restorer, anyone know the main ingredient??
Hi all , I see many companies advertizing head lamp restorer for yellowed plastic lenses. Anyone know the common main ingredient?? I would like to clean up the wifes head lamps, and thought I could likely buy the common main ingredient at the hardware store IF I knew what it was !! I'm thinking an acid of some type. Thanks, Bob

I have used rubbing/polishing compound
on an old set of plastic windows on a 62
jeep. Using a spinning polisher. And I
was able to see clearly through them.
If it works on these thin windows
I would think it would work on the
headlights.

You can use an ultra fine rubbing compound to clean the headlights.Only they won't stay clean for long, there must have been a hard coating of some kind on the outside surface that wears off over time.

ACETONE IS WHAT I HEARD WILL CLEAN THEM UP BUT NEVER USED IT. I JUST BOUGHT NEW LIGHTS FOR A 99 MUSTANG, $120 DELIVERED OF EBAY FOR BOTH PAIR AND XENON BULBS. THEY ARE JUST PINNED IN THE CAR TOOK ME 5 MINUTES TO CHANGE.

2000 grit sand paper then plastic polish or a buddy of mine will scuff them up with some 1200 grit and spray some good clear coat they will stay clear that way.

yeah don't use rubbing compund, you can but rubbing compund has abrasives in it.
like tim said 2000 grit, then polish.
i did it on my old '88 and it lasted for at least a year, i only had it that long.

the problem with this issue is that, after time, the light rays actually passing through the plastic discolor it, so polishes and compounds may help temporarily, but it will never look the way it did when it was new. Your better off getting a new pair.
