You initially over filled it. The manual may say it takes 9.5 qts, but about 40% of that is in the torque converter. The initial refill for what you did would have been about 4 qts. Then run it and top off. I've done over 100 tranny services on auto trannys. Sounds like you probably damaged the front pump. Time for a rebuild.

dude, dont even bother re-building the trannie, if its slipping, get a new car. once the trannie goes, everything goes, and youll spend so much money on the car trying to save it. trust me, trannies are nothing but hell. if your car is a 4cyl, it should cost about as much to replace the car as it will for a trannie re-build.

I just found out something interesting. My tranny might still be having problems (hope not but its definitely old) because shifting isn't always so smooth, but I think I discovered what part of my problem is.
The stick (its automatic) slips. I'll be in drive and it'll slip into neutral - the RPMs shoot up and then it'll slip back into drive. I held the stick firmly in drive for about 10 mins and it didsn't slip once. Any idea what I need to replace/tighten/etc to fix this problem?

The linkage is probably just out of adjustement. Also check the damn fluid level befor driving it any farther! and make sure the level is in the crosshatch when the car is hot , in park and idling. Make sure it is no lower or higher than the crosshatch! Overfilling a trans so severly as you did is hands down worse than under filling it.
P.S. if you drained 4.0 qts what makes you think to put in 6?[sm=dontgetit.gif]
If your lucky the trans isn't F*cked but chances are after you drove it with "fluid pouring out of the tranny" you prolly murdered it. Oh yah, I'm a mechanic so what I'm saying is true, Which is better than can be said for some of the "stuff" posted in reply to this prob.
Good Luck!

So how long should I let the thing idle before I check the level (to ensure that it is 'hot')?
Also - what is the linkage? And how do I fix it?
