Knocking noise after spark plugs replacement
I bought 2000 Mustang V6 recently with 146k miles on the clock. It was running Ok but with No power for 3.8L engine so I went to the closest Advance Autoparts and got a set of plugs...I think Autolight. After installing the plugs and starting the car there was day and night difference as far as power and throttle response but after a short ride the car developed a cnocking noise. Mostly when the car worms up and on drive at low speed is when I can hear the noise but it drives me nuts. I’m going to do transmission service and see if that would change anything but in the mean time I was wondering if you guys can recommend a good mechanic who knows this cars that can help or give me an idea ? Or where I can run diagnostics on the engine and get a feel about the engine health. Thanks in advance for your input guys. PS. I tried to upload a short video but it didn’t go throughout |
Did you check the gap on the plugs? Just because you buy them gaped, does not
mean they are. You don't need to be a rocket science to install plugs... Mostly when the car worms up and on drive at low speed is when I can hear the noise but it drives me nuts. causing the noise... |

sure the plug wires are on the correct spark plugs for that cylinder?

If the plugs were that bad, check the wires or replace them outright.

FYI, you have a coil pack.
https://static.summitracing.com/glob...sd-5528_xl.jpg AND, there are only three actual coils in the pack for the 6 cylinders. 4 & 3, 6 & 2, and 5 & 1. So, when plug 3 fires, so does 4, and so on. However, 4 may be on the exhaust stroke when 3 fires, so you still can't mix the wires up, because when 4 fires, so does 3, but 3 won't be on the compression stroke. |
Can plugs which are too long, extending too far into the combustion chamber ion this engine, possibly contact the pistons? Pull one out, look at it's condition, and compare it's length to one of the old plugs. Just a thought.

If you put the wrong ones in, they can. You should have compared them immediately
before putting them in. Some are a tad longer, some are a tad shorter, but if you got the right ones when they were looked up, you should be fine. None will be long enough to make contact with the pistons unless you were given the wroing ones. |
