Considering that the Ford book time is 6 hours and it takes every bit of 5 if you actually set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash properly - cause if you don't they will howl like a banshee, I would say that $100 - which is 15 or 20 bucks an hour labor is dirt cheap. Hope he is really doing it right and not just tossing them in there and hoping he gets them close to spec. Oh, and the wonderful fluid that ours uses is about $15 a quart, not to mention the friction additive that he better use. I would ask a ton of questions for a $100 install.

What type of shop should you go to when trying to get the gears installed? Just your regular bodyshop around the corner? (First time doing these type of mods)
I'm thinking about getting the 3.73 (yes I have an auto) and underdrive pullies installed at the same time maybe.

I would check into speed shops in your area. You can go to Diablosport.com and find a local shop. Other than that I would use someone who specializes in that type of work. Where you at? Never mind - Long Island. Let me check.

Do any of you guys know anyone with 3.73s? Is it a big difference compared to the 4.10s. I have a set of 4.10s but haven't installed them yet. Just worried that it's too short. 2800 at 80 is pretty good though. Is there any chance of being gear limited with 4.10s or could it still get to the governor?

Picture of my car and the drawing that I'm doing of that same picture of my car. It's not finished yet though. I've got more shading to do on the body.

I have an auto with 4:10's and I have hit the governor twice. I don't know anyone with 3:73's, however I think that anything other than 4:10's would be a mistake. I do not beleive you are going to be limited gear wise at all, but I am far from an expert so some one with more knowledge please chime in.

He's a close friend of mine that has been working on cars for a long time. Currently his is building a 393 stroker for his 88GT. He's also done lots of suspension and brake upgrades on his car. He does this work from his home.

He's had people come in from Pittsburgh (about 2 hours away) and from West Virginia to have gears installed. I just talked to him on the phone. He said that he'll do it for $100 labor only. You bring the gears (He mentioned MOTORSPORT only but may not have been 100% serious. I could find out.) the gear oil you want and friction modifier if you want it and he'll get the job done right.

He currently has 3 Camaros and 3 Mustangs to do (not counting mine). He's going to do mine in the Spring.

If anyone is interested in making a trip to Altoona, PA to get their gears installed for $100, email me (Ron) at ronchap200027@yahoo.com or you could email him (Steve) at, now don't laugh, gotohell75@hotmail.com. Please don't read anything into the email address. He's really a good guy.

Thanks man!! I'm going to look around when I'm ready to get this done and see if I can find a good shop that's closer. I know there's a shop that has a Mustang dyno, so I might ask them if they can do the installs and dyno the car at the same time, maybe I'll get a "package" deal that way. They might charge more per hour though, we'll see.
