Default dropping to 3rd on the automatic

I realize that the car's not gonna allow a drop to 3rd gear if it's gonna rip the tranny apart but at what speed would you say you could safely drop the automatic to #3 and expect it to hit safe and sound?

I'm not entirely sure. Here's the easy way to find out:

Drive to second gear.

Put the car in 3

Find the redline and remember that speed.

Adjust from there.
