Default Saleen SC install question

I am in the middle of installing a Saleen SC kit on a 2006 and I have these "U" shaped sensors that aren't listed in the install docs. I tried to find them in my Ford tech manual without much luck either. There are 2 of them; one on each side pointing towards the idler pulleys. The problem is there is no way that I can see to reinstall the driver side one. Anyone know what they are and can they be deleted?

Numbers on the part:
5W7T-18801-AA
PBT-GF30

Pretty sure those are the variable cam timing sensors. You're going to want to keep them.

Sorry, bad picture; the front sensor is the one in question. Nope, not the VCT or the CMP. These puppies would be mounted just under where the Saleen water crossover ends are. Single red wire on the connector.

That looks like an inductance device to me (like a transformer or coil aka Hall effect device) based on what I know about electricity (I am an EE).

Now this is just a guess, but that idler pulley close to it probably has a magnetic spot on it so that every time it comes by that sensor, it causes a pulse of current (and voltage) to be generated (Faraday's Induction Law) and then the computer picks that up, and does something with it. It is counting something and as Hawgman said, using that data to control something (like the variable cam timing).

I would be real careful if I were you. I wouldn't remove them![sm=badidea.gif]

Hope this helps.

Mike

Hey Mike,

I agree with you about how it works, just looking for the "why is it there". The Saleen kit replaces the pulley on the driver side so I am SOL if there is a mag spot on the stock unit. I don't want to remove it but with all the changes to the mounting points I haven't figured out to make a bracket for it to be in the correct location. I put the passenger side one back although now there is no place for the indexing tab to mate with. Is this new on the 2006's?
