Default spoiler removal

I don't like the spoiler. It's only on there for looks right? ............ if I take it off I'm not gonna spin out anymore than usual or all of a sudden at high speeds? Probably as easy as it looks to remove?

Um nope You won't spin out. But you will have 4 holes in your trunk that you will need to do something with.

It serves no aerodynamic purpose. The holes can and should be sealed but you would most likely need to repaint the decklid. If you were interested in other flush mount "duck tail" spoilers, most of them will cover the original holes. You would still want to seal the holes with some silicone caulking to prevent rusting.

+1 Spoilers on the mustang and most ANY street driven car, serves no purpose. You can take it off and I've heard of people using plastic caps painted to match the car to fill them.

(correction, wing won't do anything at anything below 150MPH beyond that it actually adds to the drag, on porsche's when they hit above 180 it actually will help with grip)

There are 4 nuts on the underside of the trunk lid that you need to remove. Once those are removed, there is 3M tape between the spoiler and the trunk lid. Take a piece of wire and work it all around each side then pull up on the spoiler. If it is still stick on good, take something to pry up on the spoiler but put a rag or something under the prying instrument you are using and it should just pop right off. Now you have 4 holes in your trunk lid and a little 3M tape stuck. Pull off as much tape as possible and use some GooGone to remove the left over. Have someone weld in the holes, grind and sand smooth and repaint.

A better idea is if you know someone that has another car the same color as yours without the spoiler like a V6 and see about changing trunk lids with them. The rear emblems are just stuck on with 3M tape so that would be an easy swap.

Excellent idea; give a v6 owner a free spoiler; only problem is many people would be too scared that both decklids would get scratched or worse, in the process; and you know dealing with a stranger and getting something for FREE.... ahhhh scary!!!!! (lol)

If they want the GT emblem, IMO let em have it. ...keep the pony one for your GT man!!!

But yeah, two people who are a bit handy could pull the swap in under an hour. Since I didn't see any alignment capability when I pulled mine I'd say you would likely not have any alignment issue, which is nice.

Default RE: spoiler removal Ford's reply 3/28/06

Thank you for contacting the Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center regarding the spoiler on a 2005 Mustang GT.

The spoiler mounted on the rear of a vehicle functions as an air deflector to reduce lift at high speeds.

In addition, please be advised that Ford Motor Company does not provide vehicle performance data such as the the speed at which a spoiler functions. You may wish to contact a trade publication such as Car & Driver or Road & Track with your inquiry.

We consider the satisfaction of our customers one of our most important objectives. If you have any other inquiries or concerns, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to address them for you.

Sincerely,
Arnique

Questions: V8 2005 Mustang GT Premium 4.6L 3V 5 speed Automatic w OD. Is the rear spoiler there for "looks" or does it actually perform an aerodynamic function? What specifically is that function AND at what speed does it occur?
