Canned vs Email vs Custom tune???
Hello guys,
Well, I sold the S4, thanks for all your replies about the safest way to transact the deal. I picked up my 06 GT 5spd last friday night and I love it!!!!!!!!!! It has been raining on and off since Friday so I will get pics up soon. It is a Black premium, black leather, IUP with the carbonish looking dash not the shinny aluminium, custom alarm system, and side airbags, and shaker 500, and the machined 17" wheels.
Compared to my audi, the new GT is a totally different beast as is expected when going from FI to NA. The sound of the V8 and the instant torque is amazing. The only thing that is missing is the GT's 3rd gear is not nearly as strong as the audi's was. So I need to start modding.
I have been reading all the posts on here about the JLTII/C&L CAI and SCT Xcal2 combo and I think that would be a great first mod. I think that will make third gear fell much better. Some of you have had problems with a tune from Brenspeed or Evo and usually the issue is corrected by a call to either Brent of Fred, however the great majority of you love your tunes from both of these places. However, there were some posts of people buying a similar combo and when they went to dyno the car the A/F was like 18 and damaging the motor. Some replies were that you can't trust the email tunes, etc. etc. And that they should have found a local tune shop and have them dyno the car while making the custom tune.
My question to you guys is: Are the tunes from Evo or Brenspeed considered canned, email, or custom? If they are custom, do I need to install the product and drive directly to a dyno shop and check the A/F to make sure? If you guys think the safest way is to find a local tuner, then do any of you guys know of someone really good in the chicago/north chicago area that would have this combo? And lastly, if I go to a local place, how much more will I be paying on average over the same thing from Brent or Fred?
You guys have helped me in the past, so thanks in advance again.

RE: Canned vs Email vs Custom tune???
I just orderd my gt, all most the same as yours. So i dont know much; but i figured i would let you know that i see alot of people also adding 4.10 gears to there cars. And i would think w/ shorter gears, 3rd would pull harder. And most likly 4.10 gears, cai/tune, etc together would really help. Just my "guess" at it.

i ran with a brenspeed tune for over 6 months. i had the A/F checked with his tunes and they were all fine/safe. basically, my experience running with brenspeed tunes was they are very, very good, are a great value for the money and his customer service is fantastic.
whether you get a canned or custom tune, you'll have to buy a programmer, e.g. the SCT X2 or Diablo Predator, which cost several hundred dollars.
a canned tune from brenspeed or similar is your cheapest option.
a custom tune wil run you *at least* several hundred dollars over and above the cost of a canned tune: there is typically a separate charge for dyno time and a separate charge for the tuner's time, depending on is he giving you a tune for nitrous, race gas, forced induction setup, intake only, etc.
the most inexpensive way to get a custom tune is to participate in a dyno/tuning day organized by a local mustang group; that's what i did and it was significantly cheaper, but still hundreds of dollars.
hope this helps

any tune you order by phone or over the internet is a "canned" tune. any tune you get by putting your car on a dyno and having a tuner adjust timing, a/f etc. is a "custom" tune.

RE: Canned vs Email vs Custom tune???
I have nothing but love for brenspeed and evolution but I have said all along that you should only do a mail order canned tune if it is your last resort. What I mean by 'last resort' is you do not have a custom tuner in your area or you do not have a GOOD custom tuner in your area. There are a lot of guys out there jumping on the bandwagon and offerring custom tunes who don't know squat about these cars IMO. Brenspeed and evolution are better than many 'custom' tuners IMO. If you don't have access to somebody with a proven track record of performance with these cars, then I think the canned tunes are the best way to go.

RE: Canned vs Email vs Custom tune???
You know, would it be a good idea to maybe have a sticky of tuners per state or general area, along with comments from people who have experienced these tuners? Maybe it's too much or maybe it's already been done, but just today I've seen a couple posts asking about tuners close to X location/state.
Good idea, or junk...?

RE: Canned vs Email vs Custom tune???
Evolution has a strong canned tune for the v6's and since Fred drives a gt himself I can only imagine what he offers the gt customers. He dynos the cars right there and is experienced with what he's doing. Canned or custom he can hook you up and is very fairly priced. Less then other dealers and should be atleast researched if not spoken with before you buy anywhere. Great customer service and is a really down to earth guy.

RE: Canned vs Email vs Custom tune???
I have been very satisfied with the brenspeed tune as well in the short run so far. Dyno tune will be in the future and only makes sense for anyone ultimately, once they have a trusted place to go to. Question on the same tuner topic - is it really necessary to take out the fuel pump and fan fuses every time you reprogram? (hope thats not considered a hijacking, im new here)

I agree. I met him like 1 month ago when he installed my CAI and tune (canned I believe). I didn't have time to dyno it but I will dyno the car the 22nd of this month. Me and a bunch of guys are driving up to this place again for some more abuse (kidding of course)
He's a really nice guy. Maybe it is me and I can't confirm this but I just wish his customer service can be just as good as it was before the sale. Other than that, I am OK and happy and would gladly buy more and would recommend him to anyone.
