SCT 93octane tune + pinging.

RE: SCT 93octane tune + pinging.
I'm bringing this back up because I wasn't hearing engine ping (I dont think). I ended up retarding the timing in the 4K-8K range by 3deg but would still hear the ping. I noticed one cool night right after start up I heard the same noise in 1st gear @ high rpms (which it shouldn't have done under those circumstances). I had the windows down and it sounded like it was under the car.
I checked and I too had the missing bolts on the bell housing dust plate. I bought some bolts, but them on and put my timing back to normal. No "pinging".
They sounded very similair.

Maybe you guys should take some of the 93 Octane gas to a lab and have them
test it too to see if you are REALLY getting 93 Octane.
If you have the option of 91 Octane, I'd just use that anyway.
The difference is maybe 2-3 hp and you are probably paying
more for the 93 Octane over 91 Octane gas as well.
Not worth it for a couple hp and the possibility of pinging.

My pinged also until I starting running the 93 octane gas with the 87 tune. Now it runs like an ape running through the jungle. By the way before I changed I also got a check engine light once too.

If your using colder plugs do not use octane booster. The chemical will collect on the plugs. I know it happend to me. When I pulled the plugs the side of the plug facing injector was caked in orange and the opposit side of plug was as white as the day I put it in. That was in only 50 miles of driving

I have been getting some engine ping running the 91 tune (AZ gas is the same as Cal). Anyway for me I think the temperature (110 degrees) is the probably the cause of any engine ping I get. I have been driving it a little nicer to minimize the chance.

If it hasn't been disabled with the tune, if the computer "hears" the knocking (from a sensor), then it will back down the timing and you should feel a loss of performance.
You might want to look at your tune and either bump up the fuel in the band where it pings or take out a degree of timing and test it again.
Cooler sparkplugs (the 0's) can help as well.
If you pull a plug and see tiny purple and/or blue ***** on the insulator, that is a sure sign of spark knock.
Hope this helps.

The orange powder you are seeing is from MMT that is used in some of these octane boosters:

It will make your plugs turn red as a fox's fur!
