Default Gear Shifting

Just a quick question... I was sitting at the gas station tonight and my buddy was in the car as i was pumping. He started to shift the gears (pretending it was a Skyline driving from the right side, he is a dork). Anywho, i was always told that you never want to shift the gears unless you have the cltuch pushed in. So i have never moved the gears without it pushed in. Is this correct or does it not matter at all?

Even with the Clutch down you should "dry shift" your gears, just do it when the cars is moving (except putting it in 1st)!

It will not make the Gears brake, but it's not good for them!
