K&N air filter????
 

I've heard great things about the filtration of the K&N air filters, but I've also seen websites and heard mechanics say that it's not as good as advertised and can actually be worse than regular filters. Anyone know the truth???

well i have a k&n typhoon intake and i love it, dont kno much about the filter, seems fine, thats what i have heard the best about

K&N air filters are less restrictive to air intake and give better airflow to the engine. Just to give you an example, try breathing through a paper bag and then try breathing through a cotton shirt. You'll notice a difference. I've used K&Ns in every vehicle I own, and owned, and they always improved performance, especially MPG.
The cost of getting a K&N ($35 - $45) will benefit you in the long run since all you have to do is clean it every 50,000 to 100,000 miles depending on your driving environment.
A paper filter will cost anywhere between $7 to $15 depending on the brand. If you estimate the number of times you would replace a paper filter by the time your car gets to 50,000 to 100,000 miles, that could be at least 10 or more times. So, multiply 10 times $7 (cheapest filter) and you get $70. So which is the better value. The K&N? ($35 - $45 and reusable) or the restrictive paper filter?

I'm not sure what mechanics are telling you that, but if its a local dealer, their biggest profits come not from car sales, but from service and parts.
So, to make money, mechanics will take advantage of any opportunity use their parts. I'm sure there a honest mechanics out there, but thats from my experience.
