I believe after following guys like powerhouse who have tested the limits of many stock components that the tranny is good for up to around 550-600 HP. I have seen guys like Don simply have their stock tranny rebuilt and beefed up a bit and have it garunteed to 800 hp. From what I've seen, I think rebuilding the stock tranny and beefing it up is a reasonable and cost effective alternative to replacing it if you're going for big HP IMO. If you're staying under 600, I would leave it as is and beef up everything else around it...

manual trans are always stronger and far less expensive to fix when they do break fewer moving parts means better relyability/longevity/maintenance. but as far as driveability auto is the only way to go. and i will never miss third at 6000 rpm.

Well I'm gonna be throwing what ever gets you 400 rwhp from a Saleen into mine starting next weekend! So assuming a 20% loss for an automatic that should be right at 500hp at the crank.
We'll see how she holds up!!!
Also, it would be hell to blow one up since you can't add fluid to the damn things! That is a weird one. Why they didn't put a dipstick in for the tranny is baffling!

Don rebuilt his auto trans with art carr and I got a new 4 speed AOD and that's one of the things I told him.... "I have a dipstick and you don't na na na"
You would have also thought a nice little trans cooler up front would have been nice...
