take a look at the off road x and h pipes on the market...the only difference is the h has 2-3inches of seperation between the two sides while the x has direct cross paths. the flow characteristics will be nearly identical, and there should be NO POWER DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER given the size of our motors, the relatively large diameter of the exhaust piping, and the naturally aspirated condition. strap on a blower and you MIGHT notice up to 5hp diff, but i still say nay.

im not discounting your nascar knowledge, but you do have to consider that those motors are bigger, flow MUCH more air considering they rev well over 10000rpm, and make 600-900rwhp
The flow characterisitics are NOT that similar, at least at high flow rates. The "2-3 inches of seperation" might not seem like much--and it's not. But the key difference is that the X-pipe has a merged shape, whereas the H-pipe has a "T" junction with no merging of flow. It's like comparing a tight 90-degree corner with a slowly sweeping turn.

Now I agree completely that for most of us the effect on HP will be minimal, if there is any at all. But, for serious engine the X-pipe does have an advantage.

ok, we are on the same page then. that is what i thought. im a mechanical engineer...i know that the x pipe will obviously provide for a more laminar fluid (air) flow...but with the diameter (2.5-3in) of the pipes and the relatively low cfm flowing through it under our power and rpms ranges, the difference would be minimal until, again, you got into some SERIOUS power and air flow. i am also biased toward the tone of an h-pipe haha

uh oh. n0ob alert.

i thought nascar ran open headers?
Nope ... they run long tube headers to straight pipes that exhaust at the side, in front of the rear wheel. Depending upon the track/team, they may run 1 separate pipe per header (no X or H connecting them) both exiting on the same side, or put in a crossover pipe connecting the two, and run one exhaust pipe on each side.

CrazyAL it is great to see you on here again and I have not seen you in a while. I enjoy your knowledge and advice on this forum and welcome your responses on MF.com. On to the debate. I have to agree with CarzyAl and Sleeper05 but I have the H-pipe and love the sound with my magnapacks (straight thru design). Deeper and reminesent of the sound of previous stangs I have owned. Now that I am have FI the sound changed greatly as more air and fuel are being mixed and expelled through the exhaust. I do like it but sometimes miss the N/A sound of my exhaust system. Hard to explain. Regardless she is mean and has the HP to back the look and I am very happy overall. Now on the all the Spohn suspension components i need to get to keep the power to the ground! Take care J
