Buy '06 or Order '07
Hey Guys,
I've been saving to buy a new Mustang GT Premium and I need some advice. What are the pros/cons of buying an '06 vs. ordering an'07? Are there price breaks either way? I appreciate the feedback.

You should be able to get close to invoice price if you order. If you buy off the lot, you will probably pay a little more than that. Most people order to get exactly what they want, there's a bit of a thrill in the anticipation while you're waiting too

It really depends on where you are, who you talk to, and what dealer you use.
I'd say, if you don't mind waiting a few months order and '07. You can get exactly what you want. Also, if you shop around you can get a very decent price. Just talk to a few fleet managers, hopefully one will quote you a low ball price, if not, play them against each other a little. All I had to do was send out 4 or 5 emails and I got a deal for $300 over dealer invoice price.
If you can't wait, I'm sure you can talk a salesman down to a fair price on an '06 since the '07s just started rolling off of the assembly line. Again, just negotiate. Do not settle for second sticker. There should be no reason you can't get to MSRP or below if you do a little shopping around and haggling. It may be harder to get exactly the options you want though since you'll have to find a car lot that has what you want in stock.

I'm in the same boat.
The only reason I'm waiting is to see exactly what the 2007's are going to have/weigh.
The big change is the "thicker gauge steel" in "certain" panels and extra welds at "key points"
to make the car a bit more rigid.
Ford did this solely for the GT500 to support it's extra weight, but are doing the additionals
on ALL 2007 Mustangs as well, just for ease I'm sure.
Problem is, how much more rigid, and how much weight gain??
The 05/06's are pretty d@mn rigid already, so unless you are going to mod
the heck out of the car and push it too it's limits, do you really need the car to
be marginally more rigid at the cost of adding potentially 100 extra pounds??
What gets me is this:
For 2007 Ford is making the manuals standard axle ratio 3.31:1 instead of the 3.55:1 in
the 05/06 GT's. This would, without a doubt give the car better gas mileage.
Yet for 2007 the EPA's ratings are supposedly the same at 17 City 25 Hwy.
How could that be? Well, if the car weighs 80-100 pounds more, that would counter
the gas savings the 3.31 gears would give.
And that's probably WHY Ford gave the 2007 Mustang GT the 3.31 gears as standard, so
they could keep the same EPA gas mileage ratings.
If that's the case, I'm going to run out and find a left over 2006 that I can get a great deal on.
I'll give up a bit of rigidity (I'm not going to be autocrossing the car anyway) for better
performance all the while getting the same gas mileage.

Where did you hear that Ford is adding the welds and steel to all '07's and not just the Shelby's?

RE: Buy '06 or Order '07
There aren't really much difference in the 2. I ordered a 2007 so I could get exactly what I wanted and not have to choose of the lot that was picked over. Also It is 1 year near so resale will always be a little bit better.

It's been reported in 2 or 3 car magazines that I've read now, including Fast Fords or one
of the Ford dedicated magazines that recently tested the GT500.

Why does everyone keep bringing up the welds?
FYI welds, in and of themselves, weigh very little. Unless they're adding big chunks of metal like crossbeams, I would be suprised if extra welds netted over 5lbs.
Not to mention Ford has already published the weight a 3356lbs.

I think the biggest advantage for the 06 - price. Dealers will be willing to discount to move inventory (and you get it right away). Nice advantage for the 07 - you could order what everything you want (but you'll have to wait...).
