The life really depends on your driving habits and whether or not it's automatic. Automatics tend to go through pads faster since you have to ride the brakes more.
Don't go with something too exotic without upgrading the rotors as well or you will end up chewing the rotors out or ending up with major noise issues.
If you go semimetallic, be sure to at least cross hatch your rotors or you will get squealing (yes, even if you put the antisqueal on the back of the pad). The best option for those is to go with slotted rotors.
Ceramics, I don't know as much about those.
