05-06 Manual 0-60 time 1st & 2nd gear only
I was wondering if anybody else noticed this in their manual stangs, but if I try a fast take off flooring each gear, I end up having to shift into 3rd gear before 60 (and changing gears means slower times), because the RPMs remain high when you shift from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd .
However, a different approach is to just shift out of first gear as quick as you can (at roughly 20mph) and let 2nd gear take you all the way to 60. It's much faster 0-60 by the feel of it. It seems to me that it's faster than the 5.1s that the car is spec'd to be. I don't have a stopwatch to test my theory. Just thought I'd throw this out there, in case anyone else has noticed this and tested it. This is on a stock 06 GT manual - no mods yet.

20MPH in 2nd gear is a great way to test out the breadth of your torque band, but not a good way to accelerate...
There was a thread about using a 20-60 in 2nd as a test and stockers were accomplishing this seemingly simple feat in 5+ seconds!!!
That's 4.5->5+ seconds to go accelerate a whopping 40MPH...
There is also a thread on what speed in what gear that is instructive here:
https://mustangforums.com/m_1666493/tm.htm
Note that 20MPH is 1900RPMs in 2nd - about 2.5K shy of an interesting point in your torque/HP cruve...
Also note that 20MPH is only 2900RPM in 1st - about 1.5K shy of an interesting point in your torque/HP much less the peak..
Granted shifting takes time, but bogging the car in low RPMs is more expensive...
I have never measured my "fast" shift, but typical human muscles can make such movements in 200-300mS (takes a lot of practice to coordinate that)... If you are shifting "fast enough", the engine does not get a chance to rev up between gears and the 05/06 PCM effectively RPM matches for you (far from perfect - but requires less skill than if it did not do this).
P.S. Why shift into 3rd prior to 60? That is only ~5300 RPM - you have at least 700RPM to go?

+1.....Staying in 2nd gear is waaay slower. Personally I don't even throw second when rolling through a stop sign[sm=devilangel.gif]...I shift back to first.

Of course, I would never, ever do that - it would be wrong...

Yikes, when I roll a "pause" sign, I would red-line if I went back to 1st!

[sm=icon_rofl.gif] I love it "pause" sign. "Officer, somone once told me it was more of a "pause" sign, like stop at will.

who cares about 0-60? do you guys actually measure your cars performance by that?

If the car scares the crap out of me during acceleration, it is almost fast enough...

i think it does feel a little faster when you shift earlier like that, but yea, its definitely all psychological. shifting earlier just provides a longer constant acceleration up to 60, probably the reason it feels a little faster, IMO
