Damaged Engine Due to Mods?
Hey Fellow Gear Bangers,
Read on the Saleen website that if you change the air induction system and/or the exhaust on a stock 05 or 06 without re-flashing the computer, you can damage the engine. Says the computer chip is so sensitive, that these changes with throw if out of whack. Any of you gearheads heard of this or can offer any advice? I'm looking at putting a cold air induction and axle back exhaust on my 06 GT.

RE: Damaged Engine Due to Mods?
The cold air kits- except k&n- need to be tuned due to the mass air flow sensor- something to do with voltage and air flow across the MAF with the larger tube. Someone will post better than me on the technical side. As for cat back exhaust- no tune needed. Gratenelli actually replaces the MAF with one that will read the correct voltage without a tune, the others adjust what the computer reads. The benefit of a tune is also doing a 93 octane tune and getting more power.

RE: Damaged Engine Due to Mods?
Yes, this is common knowlege and it's nothing unique to the mustang.
Any significant change to the intake (etc.) alters the air-fuel mixture of the engine. While it is not likely this will cause damage, it can.
If you are going to mod your intake, then I suggest that you purchase a combo kit of both the CAI and a tuner. This way you will get more performance gains than just the CAI alone, and you will eliminate any potential risks to your motor. The tune is actually worth more HP than the CAI is.
The tuner is also a crtical building block for future mods.

RE: Damaged Engine Due to Mods?
Exactly.
A CAI will require a tune (either that or a differently calibrated MAF sensor, which is what some of the "no-tune" CAIs use)
Axle-back exhaust does not require a tune, though major exhaust system changes (longtubes) do.
