RE: Best bang for the buck TIRES
Mickey Thompson E.T. Street drag - $180
great tire for the strip, little pricey, but the grip is unbelievable. not highway tire at ALL.
Mickey Thompson E.T. Street Drag street RADIAL - 175
unbelievable grip, and you can drive home. if theres no rain. great tire.
Nitto 555R - $145
again, great tire, not the same gains as M.T's but its cheaper and close. very popular
BFGoodrich G-force t/a Drag Radial -150
all i have to say is WOW. same as M.T. but you can drive home on em and not be worried. great tire for a street car to drag on.
(all prices are for 275/40R17) that equates to a 26.1/11.5R17 pretty wide, +2", one inch shorter in height.
these are all higher priced than say Kumhos, which are still bang for the buck. consider these slightly towards the hardcore spectrum. not gonna drive around town with em regularly. have heard people running the BFGoodriches, but im still not sure if i feel comfortable with that width on an 8" rim. gotta check into that some more.
for less expenses, but still a recommended tire,
Kumho ECSTA 712
they'll run you approx 100, give or take tire size. uni-tread, good wet/dry traction. straight line is good, not a drag radial though.
Cooper Zeon Sport A/S
good tire, again not a drag radial. comprable to stock pirellis, little better dry traction. only tire in this group ive used on my own car. and it was better than stock, but im looking for something more. still a great tire.
cooper zeon 2XS - great dry/wet traction, runs in at 110, plus or minus. the treadwear rating is only 280, lower than most at 380-400. but its a great tire. bro runs these on his camaro, and they hooked very nicely at 312 horsepower. hasnt seen any premature treadwear, thinking the rating was off. but they were nice.

RE: Best bang for the buck TIRES
I auto cross my car, and i have found that the best BANG for the buck is the Hankook RS2, with a 200 treadwear it is a very grippy tire. I went with a 245/45/17 size for a couple of reasons, #1=price, #2 with a lower profile it gives me a better gear ratio (higher numerically) I have drag raced it at a 1/8 mile strip and found that the car launches best with about 25 psi in the tires and leaving at about 3500 RPM, I have found that a tad wheelspin is desireable over leaving at 2000 rpm with little or no wheelspin. I can easily get a full season out of the car in autocrossing AND still drive them on the street.

RE: Best bang for the buck TIRES
Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to take a closer look at the Nitto's I have heard of a lot of people having issues with the sidewalls of the nittos though. A crack in the sidewall has me concerned about this brand.

I'm running 295/35/18 FIRESTONE FIREHAWK"S in back. That's right, the firestone special. And they're great. I'm cutting 1.8sec 60' times at the track with these and driving around all day. These tires get supprisingly sticky when they are heated up. I bought them because I needed new tires right away and this was what I could find on short notice, but man, what a suprise on performance.

I've got 305/45/18 Nitto 555R Extreme Drag Radials on the back of mine. Not cheap, but a pretty dang good overall tire. Works in the rain, works on the strip.

These BFG's that come with the stock 18"ers are awsome also.. don't know about the cost though.
