Its basic chemistry, when the particles that make up your engine block are cold theyre closer together, therefore your engine tolerances are tighter. When the engine gets hot the particles expand making the tolerances looser.
Actually I think you have that backwards. Hot parts expand and thus cause tighter tolerances while cold parts contract and have larger tolerances that is one reason some motors, like the 5.4 is notorious for piston slap when cold and once the motor gets to operating temperature the piston slap goes away…
HaHa.. +1. Hot = expanded. Think of water.. hot water = gas, cold water = ice.

All I know, is that if I want my car cooler, I turn the little dial to A/C...That's what I know, and I'm stick'n to it!

Perhaps the loss of performance is actually psychological? When you first get in and hammer it, yer body has been previously adjusted to a state of rest, and so you feel the G's more. After cruising for a few minutes, yer body "shifts" into driving mode and you no longer feel the acceleration as accutely.

I'd also be weary of how much lap variances and driving inconsistencies effect the fractional-seconds of each lap time. You could sneeze and inadvertantly press the gas a hair more and gain time...

To make the thermostat change useful you also have to change the temperature that the fan comes on or you won't be able to maintain a consistent temperature.

my car's an auto, the light turns green punch it. the floorboard stops the pedal from going any further. there's nothing i changed to make an almost 1/2 a second difference, except letting my car sit and cool down. my car runs alot better before the temp gauge starts to move. in my case, track tested.

Performance loss due to heat soak was also a problem according to this article:
