GT 500 failure...mabye
Okay, I am a proud 06 GT owner. But when I found out about a bone stock 500HP mustang, I pissed my pants! But as time went by and road test came up and I was surprised. I was thinking 500HP=0-60 in 4.0 and 1/4 in 12.4-12.5. But its 5.4L weighed the car in (with driver) around 4,100lbs with the convertible being heavier. Reading this article from Car and Driver, a bone stock convertible GT500 pulled a 0-60 in 4.8 and 1/4 in 13.4???? A tuned GT with CAI will pull those numbers and even better with a good driver and for what, $15-20,000 less. I have to say I expected more, even from the coupe. But I have to say....The GT500 looks BAD ***!

Some people may not believe this but recently at the track there was an 05 GT S/C (Saleen) it was auto and it was running 7.7/7.8 in the 1/8th mile. Where there was a GT500 running 8 flats.
It made me very happy! LOL. Go 3 valvers!

the GT500 is typical of Ford. It's a parts bin pony. The 5.4 has an iron block, which makes the weight distribution awful, but there's a list of things they could have done better.
don't be fooled by the track #'s - that is spinning the wheels all the way down the track. Put on some hooky tires and the car is an animal.

If the 5.4 were aluminum it would have preserved the handling prowess of the S197. For me you can make all the HP you want, but if it is nose heavy and handles like covered wagon, the fun is gone.
If I had that kind of money to put in a high end Mustang it would be a Roush or a Saleen with an SC on top of an aluminum engine to retain its handling characteristics.
In 69 and 70 Ford did the same thing with the Boss 429. I got to drive one and it was a ROCKET SHIP in a straight line, but a total PIG when you had to make a turn. I could have bought the car for $2400, but I was in college at the time and had to save my money for tuition and such. I fully expect that the GT500 has the same pig handling.

A couple of weeks ago I posted about running a GT500 heads up on an 1/8th mile track. I ran 8.70 both runs and beat him. He was catching me towrd the end and in the 1/4 he may have had me. The car has potential, but it needs good tires and some suspension mods to get it off the line good.

First: From my experience, Car and Driver are not the best drivers on the track. Get a magazine that will really push that car, and it will hit 12's stock.
Second: Dont' look at the time, look at the trap speed, I'll bet you it's around 115mph. That's the tell tale sign of power. If you put a set fo gears and DR's ONLY, that is a low 12sec car, yet still has a fully stock appearance under the hood. Add a tune, and high 11's are very possible.
I keep telling people not to get discouraged with the new GT500. People need to realize that this is a car that has only been on the street for about 2 months now. There really has not been ample time for the aftermarket to mas produce and test ne parts. Even the terminators had an experimantal period. Give this car a year for R&D and I think everyone will be supprized how easily this will become the Z06 killer.
As far as the price. I don't blame Ford in the least for charging those outrageous prices. If you don't like it, don't buy one. As long as people are willing to pay that price, Ford will continue selling at that price. if people stop agreeing to pay high markup's, then you will be supprised how fast that car comes down to sticker.
I would like to see a R-code version of the GT500 though, like a GT500KR. Think about it. No radio, maybe A/C as an option, no sound insulation, basic lightweight non-power bucket seats with perhaps a rear seat delete, and a stock 3.73 or 4.10 gear ratio. You could easily put the curb weight around 3500lbs or less.[sm=badbadbad.gif]
OHH think of the massacre!! [sm=shootshoot.gif]
