Default S197 engine swap?

how hard would it be to swap out the 281ci for something bigger like a 302 or 351?

It would be hard, expensive, and emissions illegal, but not impossible.

You can bore and stroke the 4.6 up to 5.2 if you have the money.

A power adder would be a lot easier and make it feel like a bigger engine.

How much HP would you gain from boring and how much would it cost?

In this case "bigger" engine is actually inaccurate.....more cubic inches of displacement is better. The modular engines are as wide as old big blocks. Have you ever seen a SB Windsor engine next to a 4.6 modular?? The 351W would have tons of room under the hood of an S197.....but yes, you would have to mod the frame to mount the older small block.

I think he was referring to displacement.

Regardless, the list of things that would have to be modified would be very long. Mounts, bell, electrics, plumbing, fuel system, etc.

Ditto what everyone else has said. But, if you really feel you want go down that road and go through all that hassle, make it worth your effort and go for the gusto. Big Block it. Drop in a 514 crate motor. The extra weight difference won't be that big of a deal, at this point who cares about high performance handling, it's all about straight line performance now. The 385 series big block and the Mod motors are actually the same size. It will fit in the engine bay quite nicely... JMHO

Wouldn't that be cool! A aluminum headed 514 with a turbo! Big numbers all day long!

Now about those suspension mods...

And why the doors won't close...
