Possible new Ford guy - can you help?
Hi folks,
Let me introduce myself a bit. I have been a pretty much a Mopar guy for quite a while. And I still like them - don't get me wrong there. I currently own a 340 Duster 4spd car.
However, there have always been cars by other manufacturers that I've like - so I am not a Mopar nut, as it were ... cars' like shoe box Chevies, '40 ******, '50 Fords ... too many to list ... but also the Ford Mustang (except for the late '70 version - yuck to that one, sorry). I've test driven every new version of the GT from '89 on. Liked the Fox version - didn't like the '93 car I drove - did like the '2004.
The new version though is an outstanding car! I drove it twice and really really like - I'd say better than the new Mopars - most because of looks - but performance as well. Ford has really done a fine job on this car.
So why am I writing this? I joined this forum in hopes of getting the straight skinny on a couple of rumors I keep hearing about the new car, and I'd appreciate any help you can provide.
I have read a number of bad things about the fuel filler problems (you can't fill the car up / it overflows out the filler tube). Also, a Ford dealer in Vt. - where they salt the roads - told me that the car would not hold up well to winter (salted) roads. I've also been hearing about weak rear suspension (not axle) problems - and driveline thunking noise problems.
Are these still problems with the 2007 car or were they mostly teething pains? Were they ever widespread? Are these legitimate concerns? If they are, are there easy work-a-rounds?
Thanks in advance and best regards,
~Bill

I can't say that I've had any of these problems. I think on maybe one gas pump it kept shutting it off until I went to a slower speed, but that's only once in 12k miles. I've also heard about a recall on clutch packs, but these are warranty concerns that shouldn't be too much a bother and 0 out of pocket expense. I haven't had any other problems with mine, and I plan on driving mine through the winter. I'll let ya'll know how that goes. (ND winter that is)
Salt is salt and a car that has metal on it will slowly suffer, but I don't know what would make this car worse. I will probably not keep this car for over 10 years and shouldn't see any problems from salt in that time anyway. Not to mention I had my car undercoated and paint protected, so that's a 10 yr warranty on those issues anyway.
Would I recommend it??? yes! If I could afford a vette I would have gone that route, but you can't really beat this car for the money. Also, I hope you have more of a budget then just buying the car because you will itch and itch until you get mods....and then it will be more mods. Kinda the trend for most of us on here.

I don't live in a heavy salt area so I wouldn't know. I have a 2006 GT, and I had the rear end whine TSB. I took it in on one of my off days, I droped it off at 10 and picked it up after lunch, no problems since then, and it was a TSB, so no cost to me. I haven't had any problems filling y car up at all. I do remember seeing something about that, I believe it was a TSB on the 2005 models, I might be wrong.
It looks great, sounds great, drives like a dream. It is very decieving though, as it doesn't really "feel" like it is going as fast as it is. Just watch your speedo and be safe. There are alot of other nice cars, but nothing like a Mustang.

I am a bit longer in the tooth than your average hot-rodder. I have resisted adding power to my 340 car for years ... I just like a nice driver with some juice, and that looks nice - a nice GT car IOW.
The Vette is a very nice car as well, albeit more expensive. Matter of fact I was just looking over a new one in the parking lot near my office this morning - nice red one - good color for a Vette.
But the Vette is not nearly as practicle an automobile (very low - very low front overhang - very wide tires - 2-seats - small carrying cap - needs prem fuel) ... higher ins costs - hight theft rate ... on and on. I also don't feel the need to well over 400 HP - ticket magnet is all I see it as.
Thanks for your straight forward reply! Hope I get some more of those. Best regards,
~Bill

I've had my 'stang for about 3 months now and I love it. No real problems other than a stuck solenoid in the gas tank that the dealer fixed.
I'm not a "hot rod" kind of guy either and I'm probably a little older than the average member here - but not quite ready to call this a mid-life crisis either However, it was fun doing the simple mods in my signature and brought back memories of my 20s (mostly good ones). Plus I've had more than one guy in a Porsche/Corvette/BMW turn his head when he saw my car.
I'm planning to use this as my DD until the loan is paid off, then buy a more "sensible" car; maybe going bio-diesel to off-set some of the gas I'm burning when I punch it in the 'stang. At that point the 'stang will become the "fun car", may add S/C, rally stripes, etc.
If you do decide to go "Mustang" I doubt that you will be disappointed.

Having been a MOPAR Man most of my life , Turning 50 , I dug deep and scored a 06 Mustang GT. I did not feel
like waiting for 2008 on the Challenger. Then to go thru the mark-up and allotment bull. I put on the Steeda CAI and Brenspeeds 87 tune , and I just got back from a gas fillup 5 miles away and I averaged 23-24 at 45mph in 5th. I read all of the reviews ,
The pro`s and con`s , and I loved the look. Grabbed it and am damned glad I did. It`s really a 67 Mustang with a new body and all of the latest saftey gadgets. A solid Posi rear end and a racing transmission. I can drive by the seat of my pants again , and I love it.
It`s a Old school thang!

What kind of mpg are you getting - and for what kind of driving?

As for the car itself, I love it. It's solid, holds up very well, and I have only had one real problem with some air in the power steering line that gave me grief. Other than that, I've had the car in torential downpours, dirt roads, badly-kept country roads, concrete highways, DC traffic (and DC roads), you name it...and the car's held up beautifully. Mud is the only real problem. Just installed some mudflaps this weekend to solve that problem.
